How did meteorologists figure out the weather that mattered in World War 2?

Apparently meteorologists managed to recreate historical weather patterns from WWII that actually influenced military decisions. It's mad when you think about it - weather forecasting back then was so different from now, but getting it right literally changed battles. Would be curious to know how they actually did this and what methods they used to reconstruct weather from that long ago.
