I'm planning to go duck hunting seriously for the first time this fall. I've heard that everything depends on where they feed and where they fly at sunset. What do I need to consider when choosing a spot, and how do I know if a body of water is a good one?
The key thing is scouting before the hunt! Walk along the shores of the water for a few days, watch where the ducks feed during daylight and where they fly at sunset, notice if there's reeds or bushes for cover. A good waterbody is one with shallow areas (ducks prefer going there), reed beds or snags, and at the same time an open spot where you can see the approach well! It's best to set up your blind between the feeding and roosting areas, on the natural flight routes - that's when you'll have a successful hunt!
