How do I make an ATS-compatible CV so bots don't reject it?

I've been looking for a job for a month and sent my CV to dozens of companies, but nothing. A friend told me that a lot of them use automated systems that reject resumes if they're not formatted properly. How do I know if my CV is compatible with these systems? Do I have to use Word, or are PDFs okay too?
