How do I propagate a cactus from cuttings?

I have a cactus that's several years old and has grown quite a bit, and I wanted to try propagating it. I've read that you can do it with cuttings but I'm not really clear on the process: how long I should let the wound callus over, what kind of soil to use, or when to start watering. Has anyone done this successfully?

The cuttings need time to callus over before you plant them, so leave them for 3 to 7 days in a dry, shady spot so the wound seals up properly! Then use very porous soil, like a mix of cactus substrate with coarse sand or perlite because cacti hate excessive moisture. When you plant the cutting, don't water it at all for the first 2-3 weeks, then water very sparingly, only when the soil is completely dry. The process is super slow but it works if you have patience, I've seen cacti that take months but eventually roots appear and they start growing!
