I've got a road bike I bought a few years ago and lately the front derailleur's been making a weird noise when I shift between the chainrings. I'm not sure if I need to adjust the cable tension or if something else is off. Does anyone know how to help me figure out how to do it myself without going to a mechanic?
The noise when you shift between chainrings usually comes from the derailleur rubbing against the chain, and the most common cause is really cable tension. Try to find the adjustment screw on the derailleur (there's usually an "H" and "L" marked for high and low limits) and turn the cable tension barrel toward the shifter to increase tension if the chain rubs when you're on the big chainring. If the noise keeps happening, check that the derailleur isn't bent - it only takes one impact to throw everything off - and that the chain isn't worn out.
