How often should I replace my chain on a commuter bike?

I've been commuting about 40km a week on my hybrid bike for the past year and a half, mostly on paved roads with some gravel paths. I haven't replaced the chain yet and I'm wondering if I'm overdue or if there's a way to check the wear myself before taking it to the shop.
