How do you find cheap hotels during peak season?
I want to go to Italy next July, but the prices are just insane. Are there any tricks or websites where you can find better deals than on Booking and Expedia?

Direct contact with smaller, independent hotels is often worth it more than the big booking sites - they pay huge commissions to those platforms and will sometimes give you significantly better prices over the phone or by email because they'd rather book you directly. Just watch out though: some of these "cheap" deals come with hidden fees or worse rooms attached, so always read carefully what exactly you're getting.
Have you thought about whether you're flexible with your dates, or does it really have to be July? If not: June or September are often significantly cheaper and the weather is still great. Otherwise I'd check Google Hotels, Trivago and local Italian sites like Venere in parallel - sometimes smaller hotels have better prices there than on the big platforms. Another trick is to call the hotel directly instead of booking through the portal, a lot of them give discounts if you save them commission. Last-minute bookings two weeks ahead can work too, but in July that's risky.
