I'm traveling to São Paulo in September and want to stay somewhere decent without spending a fortune. I prefer being close to the metro and in a safe neighborhood. Does anyone have a hotel or chain recommendation that's worth it?
The trick is to stay in neighborhoods that are a bit farther from downtown but with easy metro access, like Vila Mariana, Paraíso or even Tatuapé - that way you'll find hotels or pousadas with way better prices than on Avenida Paulista. Look for chains like Ibis Budget or Gol, which are more affordable and usually have decent locations, and always check reviews on Google Maps about the neighborhood's safety. September is low season in São Paulo so you can negotiate if you call the hotel directly or find a deal on sites like Booking.
Apps like Booking and Airbnb let you filter by price and proximity to the metro, which is pretty much essential in São Paulo. The earlier tip about neighborhoods further out is valid, but I'd add Mooca, Belém, and even Pinheiros - they're a bit further from downtown but have major metro stations and prices drop significantly compared to Av. Paulista. Decent accommodation with breakfast runs between 150 to 250 reais a night in those areas, without paying for the glamour of being in the heart of the city.
