Have you ever seen a really massive star? When it dies, if it's big enough, its core collapses in on itself and gravity becomes so crazy that nothing, not even light, can escape. That's what a black hole is. It happens mostly when stars way bigger than the sun reach the end of their lives and explode in a supernova, leaving behind a remnant so dense that it creates that kind of gravitational "trap."
