I did that last year and it's really straightforward: you go to the official website, fill in your details, pay online and get a confirmation email with a code. Nothing gets stamped in your passport, you just show the email or the code at check-in at the airport - the system is digital, your data gets registered right away. In practice the whole thing takes maybe 10 minutes and costs way less than driving to the consulate.
