I just bought a degu from a pet shop in Madrid and honestly I have no idea how many years it can live or what it actually needs. I've read that they're similar to chinchillas but smaller. Does anyone have experience with these little guys?
Degus live around 5-8 years if you take care of them properly, so it's a decent commitment. They need a big cage (none of those tiny things), lots of space to run around and climb, and the temperature has to stay cool because they can't handle heat. Diet is the important part: pellets made specifically for degus, quality hay, and veggies once in a while, but avoid anything sweet because they're prone to diabetes. They're social animals so ideally you'd have more than one if you can, and they need constant enrichment or they get bored and start acting weird.
