I'm thinking about getting a Syrian hamster and I'd like to know what the actual monthly cost really is. I've looked at various pet shops and the prices seem pretty different. Can someone give me an honest estimate of what I'd spend on food, bedding, toys and everything else?
Don't buy based just on the initial store price, because monthly costs vary a lot depending on what you choose. Quality food and pellets run around 15-25€ per month, bedding (if you change it regularly) another 10-15€, and then you've got toys, a wheel, enrichment systems that you can reuse but will need maintenance. Overall, people talk about 40-60€ monthly if you want to take good care of your hamster, but you can get something cheaper if you buy consumables from supermarkets instead of pet shops. What's your budget that you had in mind, and do you already have a cage and accessories or do you need to get everything from scratch?
