It really depends on how secure your income is and what expenses you have - what others have already said is right. But one thing that often gets overlooked: make sure your reserve doesn't just sit in a regular savings account for too long while inflation eats away at it. Three to six months of living expenses is a good guideline, but if you're able to save more beyond that, the extra should go into a money market account or other investment vehicles instead - so your money doesn't gradually lose purchasing power.

I personally think you should have three to six months of your living expenses set aside - depending on how stable your job is and whether you have dependents. If you're self-employed or living in uncertain times, I'd lean more toward the six months, but with a stable job as an employee, three months is plenty. Some people also say you should start with one month and work your way up instead of not saving anything at all - honestly, that's also a good approach to get into the habit in the first place.
