Most experts suggest an hour or two max for schoolwork on screens at that age, with breaks built in - kids' eyes and posture take a real hit from constant iPad time. If it's just for actual classwork during school hours that's one thing, but if they're using it all day plus at home, you'd want to push back on that with the school.
Is the school actually assigning hours of iPad work, or is your kid just scrolling between lessons? There's a big difference - focused classwork for an hour or so is fine, but if they're on it most of the day switching between actual tasks and killing time, that's too much. The real issue isn't the device itself but whether it's actual learning or just screen time being called school.
