How often should I replace my whole-house water filter?

I installed a whole-house filter system about 18 months ago and I'm not sure if I'm replacing the cartridges on the right schedule. The manual says every 6 months, but my water looks pretty clear most days. Does it really need replacing that often, or can I stretch it longer to save money?

The 6-month interval isn't just about what you see - it's based on flow rate and pressure drop. If you ignore it and the filter gets clogged, you're either bypassing contaminants entirely or forcing water through a compromised cartridge, which defeats the whole purpose.

Clear water doesn't mean the filter's doing its job on contaminants you can't see - bacteria, sediment, and chemicals build up invisibly, so sticking to that 6-month schedule is really worth it for your water quality and the system's lifespan. Stretching it longer can let trapped stuff start breaking down or bypass the filter entirely, which defeats the whole purpose.
