How to explain a 2-year employment gap in a job interview?

Claudia CO 🌱 Newbie 👁 51 ⚑ Report Job Search

I've been out of the job market for personal reasons and now I'm looking to get back to work. I'm worried that recruiters will think I'm not serious or that I've lost my skills. What's the best way to explain this gap without it sounding weird?

I've seen a lot of people go through this, and what works is being honest but concise: state your personal reasons without getting into unnecessary details, and quickly focus on what you did during that time to stay current (courses, personal projects, reading in your field). Recruiters understand that life happens, and what matters to them is that you show you're back for real and that your skills are still sharp.
