Seven years is simply too long. Your face has probably changed - most people look different in 2019 than they do in 2026. Recruiters notice that immediately and wonder if that's even still you. That comes across as unprofessional and can lead to your application being taken less seriously. It's not just about wrinkles or hair - your glasses, your style, your whole presence is just different after such a long time.

But honestly, you don't necessarily need to go to an expensive studio. A lot of people - me included - these days have ourselves photographed by good photographers with less overhead and save a ton of money doing it. Or look around for smaller studios in your area; they're often cheaper than the big names. If you're applying online, your phone with good lighting can be enough - what matters is that you come across as authentic and the quality is there.

A current photo is really the smaller investment compared to what a successful application brings for your career. Don't waste money in the wrong place on this.

Get a new photo - seven years is just too long. The changes are obvious, and that comes across as unprofessional to hiring managers. I get that photo studios are expensive, but it's an investment worth making if you're serious about landing a new job. Some studios offer cheaper packages, or see if there are smaller photographers in your area who don't charge as much as the big professionals.

It doesn't have to be an expensive studio though - plenty of people take good photos with a smartphone these days if you find a bright spot (ideally a window from the side) and use a neutral background. You can also ask friends if they want to take some pictures for you. The main thing is that you look current and don't give the impression of "application pulled from a drawer."
