Foam rolling does help, but it's not magic and it's not a replacement for stretching - think of it as a supplement. The idea is that rolling breaks up muscle tension and improves blood flow, which can reduce soreness and stiffness, especially after hard workouts. Regular stretching is still important for flexibility and range of motion, so ideally you'd do both. If you're on a budget and can only pick one, stretching gives you more bang for your buck, but a decent foam roller isn't expensive and most people who use them consistently find they feel better. Just don't expect it to fix everything on its own.
