Thermal imaging cameras are actually very useful for night vision, but they work differently than traditional night vision devices - they show heat signatures instead of amplified light. That makes them perfect if you need to spot people or animals even in complete darkness or through fog and smoke. However, they're significantly more expensive than regular night vision devices, and whether it's worth it for you depends on what you're using them for - probably not necessary for the occasional observation around your garden, but very practical for regular or professional applications.
The price is really the sticking point - good thermal imaging cameras quickly cost several hundred euros, while you can get started with cheap night vision devices for as little as 100-200 euros. Whether the investment is worth it really depends on what you're using it for: for wildlife observation or if you have to work in complete darkness, thermal cameras are unbeatable because they work even when there's no light at all. In a normal nighttime environment with some ambient light, classic night vision devices are often perfectly sufficient and are a lot cheaper.
