I work a lot on the go with my MacBook and I'm sick of using the internal speakers. I keep seeing these USB-C soundbars everywhere now, supposedly super practical. Is it really worth it or is that just marketing hype?
A USB-C soundbar actually makes sense if you're on the go a lot and care about compact transport - they're way more practical than external speakers and you save yourself dealing with cables. But here's the thing: what exactly do you need it for, mobile meetings with better audio quality, or do you want to listen to music too? And how much space do you have in your backpack, does weight matter to you? Depending on that, I'd also think about whether a good wireless Bluetooth speaker might work just as well for what you need and be cheaper.
It depends on what your needs are. If you only need better sound every now and then and the size doesn't bother you, then yeah - it definitely saves you the hassle of dealing with separate speakers and cables. You pack a small soundbar and you're good to go.
But honestly: a lot of these USB-C models in the 80 - 150 euro price range are pretty mediocre. For that money you often get better quality with a smaller portable speaker that also has Bluetooth - that way you're more flexible because you can use it with your phone too. The USB-C solution is mainly interesting for people who really want to travel minimalist and switch between different devices a lot.
From my experience: try it out first to see if you'd actually use the soundbar regularly or if you'd just end up lugging it around. If you work several hours a day in different places and have audio meetings, it could be worth it. Otherwise I'd save the money and invest in a decent little battery-powered speaker instead.
