Is anyone else taking collagen supplements? Are they actually worth it?

I've been seeing a lot of people on Instagram and TikTok talking about collagen powder, like those brands Collagen Care or Solgar. I decided to try it two months ago because my skin was getting saggy and my joints were hurting, but I'm not sure if I'm actually seeing real results or if it's just a placebo effect. Has anyone here tried it and can confirm if it actually works?

Don't fall into the trap of expecting miracles because most of what you see on Instagram is pure marketing. The truth is that collagen powder does have some scientific evidence behind it - studies show it can help with skin elasticity and joints, but we're talking about modest improvements that take weeks to months to show up, not days. Two months is still not enough to be sure, especially if you're not measuring objectively (before and after photos, range of motion in your joints, etc.), so it's easy to confuse it with placebo or with other things you might be doing at the same time. My experience is that it works better when you combine it with resistance training, decent hydration and enough protein - collagen on its own doesn't work miracles, but as part of a solid routine you can see a difference.

The truth is that two months is too short a time to see significant results, especially on your skin. Collagen takes quite a bit longer to notice - we're talking three, four months minimum if it's even going to work at all. For joints it's less painful to wait because there's more scientific evidence that it helps with inflammation, but even then it depends a lot on the dose and whether you're taking it regularly. The thing is: are you drinking enough water? Taking vitamin C? Because collagen doesn't work on its own, it needs everything else together.

I personally took it for a few months because of my joints and I think it helped a bit, but it was no miracle. I noticed more of a difference when I started doing stretches and moving better. On my skin, honestly, I think the most important factor is a good-quality moisturizer, sunscreen every day, and getting good sleep - that makes way more of a difference than any supplement. Why did you start with sagging? Is it age, lifestyle, weight you lost? Because if it's genetic or the result of rapid changes in your skin, powdered collagen might not do much.

If you want to keep going, that's fine, but honestly evaluate it in another two or three months. Compare photos from six months ago to now. And see if there were other changes in your routine during the same period - sometimes we change several things at once and then don't know what actually helped.

Diego_44 asker I lost weight really fast a year and a half ago, which is why I have all this sagging skin. I drink plenty of water, take vitamin C, and sleep well! I'm going to keep it up for another six months and then compare it with old photos!

I think you're being realistic in questioning that, because even though collagen does have some scientific backing (and it does), two months is really way too short to see actual difference in your skin or joints - most studies showing results talk about three to six months of consistent use. What helps a lot is combining it with other stuff: regular exercise, sun exposure with protection, actual hydration, because collagen alone doesn't work miracles if the rest of your life is a mess. It's worth keeping at it, but with realistic expectations, and if after another couple months you don't notice a difference, then yeah, reconsider it.

I bought some jars of that stuff about a year and a half ago because my knees were throbbing after doing deliveries all day, and honestly I only noticed a difference when I combined it with regular exercise and lots of water - without those things the powder by itself doesn't do any miracles. Skin is even more complicated because the collagen you drink doesn't go straight to where you want it, your body is the one that decides where it uses it, but maybe it's worth more to focus on getting good sleep and not being out in the sun all day without sunscreen.
