Is dry food or wet food better for cats?

With my cats at home, I notice that they both prefer wet food and drink noticeably more water afterward than when I only give them dry food. And that's really the key point: cats naturally have a weak thirst drive and get much more fluid intake from wet food. That's important for their kidneys and urinary tract, especially in older cats. Wet food is also closer to how cats would eat in nature - through prey that has a high water content.

But dry food does have advantages that shouldn't be ignored. It's more convenient to handle, cheaper, and open cans don't go bad as quickly. A lot of cats also enjoy eating it, and for some it's just the better solution if their owners are out working a lot. The important thing is just making sure the cat drinks more - extra water bowls, drinking fountains, or wet food here and there.

Honestly, I'd recommend a mix. Most cats benefit from getting mainly wet food and maybe the occasional bit of dry food as a treat or supplement. Above all, pay attention to high-quality products with both options - not too much grain, good meat as the main ingredient. And if your cat has urinary tract problems or doesn't drink enough, I'd definitely go more toward wet food.
