Is it worth buying a jersey of a player who already left the team?

I'm thinking about getting a jersey of a player I really loved, but he just got transferred to another club recently. They're selling it pretty cheap since he's no longer an active player on the team. Does it make sense to spend money on that or should I just get one of someone who's still playing?

I've bought jerseys of players who've already left and honestly, I don't regret it. In the end a jersey is a memento of a moment you enjoyed watching that guy play, it's not an investment or anything. If you loved watching him play, the jersey's gonna have sentimental value even if he's left the team. And if you get it on the cheap, even better. What is true though is that you won't be able to wear it at the stadium without people giving you weird looks, but come on, that's the least of it.

The difference with buying one of someone still on the team is pretty much practical. If you buy a current player's jersey you've got more chances of seeing him in person wearing that shirt, and if he keeps being good or becomes a legend, the jersey gains more value over the years. But that doesn't mean the other one's a bad buy. Look, it's like everything: if you like that player and the amount doesn't hurt your wallet, get it. The things you buy because they make you happy are always worth it, even if they're "irrational."

If you loved the player, that's the main reason to get it. A jersey isn't a financial investment, it's something you wear because you like it, and if that guy meant something to you while he was on the team, the shirt's going to have sentimental value to you no matter where he is now. Plus, a lot of jerseys from historic or beloved players who left end up being more iconic than the ones from guys currently on the team.

What you should think about is whether you're actually going to wear it. If you'll put it on to go out, to watch matches, anywhere at all, go for it. But if the idea is just to stick it in the closet and leave it there, then maybe it's not worth it. The low price they're offering you is exactly because the market drops when a player leaves, so if you ever wanted to sell, you'd probably get something close to what you're paying now.

My advice: if you've got the money and the jersey appeals to you, buy it. It's way better to have something you like and that brings back good memories of the team than to be wondering "what if I'd bought it". Old jerseys have their own charm, and honestly, serious fans often prefer jerseys from players they loved back then over the ones from current players.

Don't buy it thinking it's going to go up in value or anything like that, that's just wasting money. What does work is if that shirt brings back a specific memory for you - like, you remember a particular match where he played amazingly, or you just enjoyed watching him every weekend for years. At that cheap price it's basically a souvenir, not an investment, so if it makes you happy every time you see it hanging in your closet, go for it.
