I'm looking to switch to electric but don't want to spend $40k on a brand new one. I've found a couple of used Tesla Model 3s and a Hyundai Ioniq 5 from 2023-2024 at decent prices. My main worry is battery degradation and whether the tech will feel outdated in a few years. Should I jump on these or hold off?
Battery degradation on those 2023-2024 models is honestly minor - most lose maybe 5-10% capacity over several years, and Tesla and Hyundai batteries are proven to hold up well. The bigger factor is that EV tech moves slower than people think; a 2023 Model 3 or Ioniq 5 will still feel current in 2028-2029, so you're not buying something that'll feel ancient in a couple years.
If those used prices are significantly lower than new (like $28-32k for a low-mileage 2023), jump on it. You'll save money upfront and the depreciation hit you'd take on a new car is way steeper. Just get a pre-purchase inspection that includes a battery health check if possible.
