I'm thinking about voluntarily enlisting in the Navy after I finish my technical course. Some friends have already done that and came out much better professionally, but I wanted to know if it's still worth it this year or if things have gone downhill.
I knew people who went there after technical school and came out with practical experience that you just can't get from school alone, plus the credibility that an institution that size gives you!
But what nobody talks about is that you should chat with people who've recently left to find out how the promotion situation is and whether the benefits after you leave (you know, that thing about priority in civil service exams and stuff) are still working the way they should. My suggestion is: before you enlist, hit up those friends of yours and ask them specifically if they actually got the opportunities they were promised and whether the time they spent there was worth it in terms of actual gains - because that varies a lot depending on how things are going that semester. Long story short, is it worth it? Probably, but only if you confirm with recent sources that it's still actually delivering!
Don't go in with the idea that it's a guaranteed path to making a lot of money fast, because it's not really like that.
The structure is actually really good and opens doors, but it comes with costs: life is strict, the hours are exhausting, and you spend a lot of time away from home.
If you have the patience for it and see this as a real investment in your long-term career (and not as a shortcut), it's totally worth it, especially coming from a technical background that already gives you a foundation.
