Does having a high-paying job actually make you happier?

I got promoted last year and my salary went up by about 40%, but honestly I'm not feeling any more fulfilled. My mates seem happier doing jobs they actually care about, even if they earn less. Is this just how it works, or am I missing something?

The thing that actually shifted my perspective was starting to track what I was spending the extra money on - turns out I was just buying stuff on autopilot to fill a gap that more money couldn't fix. Once I started redirecting some of that bump toward experiences or things that aligned with what I actually cared about (I use it to fund early morning runs in different neighborhoods, weekend trips to places I actually want to explore), the job itself felt less hollow. Your mates probably aren't happier because they earn less - they're happier because their work itself is the fulfillment part, and the money's secondary. So maybe the real question isn't whether the promotion was worth it, but whether you're using that financial cushion to build a life outside work that actually excites you, because that's where the happiness tends to come from.

Money definitely helps up to a point - like you need enough to cover rent and not stress about bills constantly - but yeah, once you've got that baseline covered, extra cash doesn't automatically flip a happiness switch 🎣 Your mates probably have something you're chasing: work that actually feels meaningful to them, which honestly hits different than a bigger paycheck. The real question is whether your new role lets you do stuff that genuinely interests you, or if it's just... more money for more stress? Might be worth thinking about whether the promotion is actually the job you want, or just the salary you thought you wanted.

I spent years chasing bigger paychecks before retiring, and honestly the bump in fulfillment was real at first but then just... flattened out. What actually changed my life was finding things I genuinely wanted to spend time on, which for me happened to be crafts after I left engineering. The money's nice for buying better tools and materials, but the satisfaction comes from the work itself, not the paycheck. Your mates probably aren't happier because of less money - they're happier because they actually care what they're doing when they show up.
