I tried switching from a 2.1 to a 2.1.2 and honestly it really depends on where you put it. If your soundbar is already positioned well in front of the TV and space isn't an issue, the overhead channels add quite a bit for action movies and spatial effects. But if you're in a small room or your soundbar is already in a tight corner, maybe it's not worth it that much.
You really notice the difference with content that actually uses Atmos audio, like recent movies on streaming or blu-ray. If you mainly watch TV series or older films, you probably wouldn't notice such a big jump. The price of the two overhead channels matters a lot - if it costs little and you have the space, go ahead and add them. But if it's a significant expense and your situation isn't ideal acoustically, first consider whether your current 2.1 leaves you unsatisfied with something specific.
If you're watching movies on a decent TV and you have the space for it, those two overhead channels do make a difference, especially in action scenes and spatial effects. The question is how much you're spending and whether your current 2.1 soundbar feels limiting to you, because the jump isn't as dramatic as going from stereo to a real surround setup. But if you have it on a lot and money's not an issue, then yeah, it's worth it - at least you won't regret it.
