Is kickboxing better than boxing for cardio?

I've been doing boxing at my gym for about 4 months now and it's great, but my friend keeps telling me I should switch to kickboxing because it burns more calories. I'm not sure if that's actually true or if he's just trying to get me to join his class. Has anyone here done both and can compare them?

Both torch calories pretty hard, so your friend isn't totally wrong, but kickboxing does involve more muscle groups since you're throwing legs into the mix. That said, boxing at a high intensity - which most people can dial up after four months - gets you just as gassed and builds serious cardio endurance. The real difference is which one you'll actually stick with consistently, since that matters way more than squeezing out maybe 10-15% extra calories per session.
