Is retinol worth using if I have sensitive skin?

MO Monica Torres MX 🌱 Newbie 👁 39 ⚑ Report Skincare

I've been wanting to try retinol for about 3 months now because I have some expression lines and I look tired, but my skin gets irritated by almost everything. I normally use Cetaphil and I'm scared that retinol will leave it red and flaky. Is there a way to start without it being a total disaster?

Retinol will work for you, but the trick with sensitive skin is starting so low you barely notice it: literally one drop mixed into your regular Cetaphil, once or twice a week, so your skin gets used to it without any drama. What nobody mentioned is that you should wait like 2-3 weeks before upping the frequency, even if you feel like you can handle more - irritation sometimes shows up late. And when you move to higher concentrations, always give yourself a few days off between applications so your barrier can recover; slow progress beats ending up with your face completely wrecked.

Have you thought about starting with retinol really low, like once or twice a week? Yeah, it's worth it, but with sensitive skin you have to be patient: start with low concentrations (0.25% or less) and space it out a lot, mixing it with your moisturizer or using the "sandwich" method (moisturizer, retinol, moisturizer again). Some irritation is normal at first, but if you wait between applications and reinforce your barrier with gentle stuff like your Cetaphil, your skin will get used to it. The important thing is not to rush the process even if you see that you're tolerating it well.

It's worth it, but you need to be careful. What's missing from the conversation is the "sandwich" technique: put Cetaphil on clean skin, wait for it to dry a bit, apply retinol diluted in a drop or two, and finish with more moisturizer. That way you'll cut down the irritation a lot. Also start with the gentlest option you can find and leave a week between uses until your skin gets used to it - patience is key with sensitive skin.
