Speed on your phone doesn't translate directly to typing on a keyboard, which is a completely different thing. If you write a lot on a computer (emails, assignments, code, whatever), having good technique and speed without looking at the keyboard saves you time and reduces fatigue. That said, if you already type fast without thinking about it, you probably won't gain that much, but honestly those old programs aren't the worst thing they could ask you to do in school, and at some point down the road you're going to thank yourself for having made the effort.

How many hours a day do you spend typing on your phone versus on a computer with a keyboard? That's the thing! Typing fast on a touchscreen is completely different from being fluent on a physical keyboard, and if you ever need to do an assignment, write a long email, or anything that requires actual typing speed, you're gonna regret not having practiced it. What nobody mentions is that the boring TypeRacer stuff they make you do actually trains muscle memory and precision without looking at the keyboard, not just speed! That habit of typing without hunting for keys with your eyes saves you a ton of time and stress later on, especially when you're focused on what you're typing, not on where the letters are.
