Since Corona, more and more theaters have been streaming their performances online or offering them as video-on-demand. I watched a production from the Burgtheater Wien that way recently instead of going to the theater. But somehow I really missed that live feeling. Does it make sense to watch theater online, or should you just save your money and not go at all?
They're just two completely different things, not really comparable 😅 With streaming you do see the same production, but you're missing the energy in the room, the closeness to the actors, and the whole atmosphere - that's a huge part of the theater experience. On the other hand: if you're broke or whatever, streaming is better than nothing, and some productions are actually made for the camera anyway. But if you have the chance to go live and can afford it, I'd say don't skimp on it - it's really a different experience. You can always use streaming as a supplement if you missed a show or want to check out a piece before you go see it in person.
I wouldn't say it's pointless to watch theater online just because it's different - sometimes it's just the only option (distance, cost, health, whatever) and then it's still better than nothing. but if you're missing that live feeling, you could try choosing theaters that work their streams with camera tricks, so not just a fixed recording but dynamic cuts and close-ups, that really does make a difference.
and from a practical standpoint: don't just watch the recordings whenever you feel like it, but block out a set time like you would for an actual show, make the room dark and sit down without your phone. sounds simple but the context really does help with concentration and you'll take away so much more.
