My 8-year-old son is obsessed with video games, is that normal?

My son spends all his free time asking to play on the Switch or the computer. I've already set a limit of one hour a day but he gets really frustrated when I tell him no. His teachers say he's doing well in class, so I don't know if it's really a problem or if it's just a phase. How much time is reasonable for a kid his age to be playing?

It's not exactly an obsession - at his age it's pretty normal for kids to be drawn to games, especially if his friends play too. The thing is, the frustration when you set limits does deserve attention, because even though an hour a day sounds reasonable, what matters is how he handles the "no" and whether he has other activities that motivate him just as much.

If he's doing well at school and isn't neglecting friends or exercise, you're probably on the right track. What might help is letting him have a say in when he plays (within your limits, of course) or finding something else that grabs his attention - sometimes when there's another exciting thing going on, games stop being the whole picture.
