The most important thing: just try doing stuff with him instead of asking what he's interested in. Kids that age tend to shut down when you ask them directly. But if you take him along - to go fishing, to the skate park, to the movies, to cook - you'll quickly figure out where it clicks for him. Sometimes it just takes the right environment and your company for interest to wake up at all.
It's totally normal in certain phases, especially during puberty. A lot of kids seem like a switched-off button then - everything sucks, nothing interests them. But usually it's just a phase and not that there's really nothing going on inside them. A lot of the time stuff is actually happening in their head while they come across as unmotivated on the outside.
But if it goes on for months and he's also totally withdrawn socially, it'd make sense to talk to someone about it - school counselor, pediatrician, whatever. But in most cases it helps to take the pressure off and just spend time together. Then you'll usually figure out naturally what he might want to do.
