My therapist wants me to track my mood but I forget constantly

Started therapy a few months ago and my therapist suggested mood tracking with an app to help identify patterns. Problem is I open the app maybe once a week and forget to log anything most days. Is this actually important for progress or can I skip it?

It's genuinely useful because patterns are hard to spot from memory alone, but if the app itself isn't working for you, just tell your therapist - they can adjust the approach to something you'll actually do, like a simple daily text to yourself or a notebook by your bed. The consistency matters way more than the method.

The tracking itself matters way less than actually doing it, and if you're forcing yourself to use an app that doesn't stick, you're basically guaranteeing failure. I get it - I'm terrible at remembering stuff too, which is why I started writing my mood down in my running journal right after my morning runs since I'm already in the habit of jotting down times and how I felt physically. Talk to your therapist about what format actually works for you, whether that's a simple note on your phone, a random notebook, or even just telling them your observations during sessions instead of logging daily - the point is catching patterns, not perfecting the system.
