I'm thinking about upgrading my 4090 that's already 2 years old. I saw the RTX 5080 at more reasonable prices, but I'm not sure if it really makes sense to switch. I game in 4K and do some video editing. Does the performance gain justify the investment?
If you're gaming in 4K and doing video work, the truth is the 4090 still delivers really well - people sometimes underestimate how much it can handle. Now, the thing nobody's really mentioning: the 5080 has less VRAM (10GB vs 24GB on yours), and that's exactly what hurts in heavy video editing, not so much in gaming. If you're working with large timelines or high resolution, you're gonna miss that memory buffer the 4090 has. The price savings disappear pretty quick when you need to do proxy work and fragment your workflow.
The 4090 is still brutally powerful for 4K and editing, honestly it's not an upgrade that makes much sense right now. The 5080 is cheaper because it's positioned a step below, not because it's better - in 4K gaming the performance difference is minimal and in video editing your 4090 still dominates quite a bit. Maybe it's only worth it if you urgently need to sell yours to get some money back, but in terms of pure value for money it's just throwing cash away. Wait another year or two, when you actually feel your card struggling on new titles, that's when it makes sense to think about upgrading.
