I think it depends on the context. if a friend just suggested a place and you both agreed to go, it's pretty standard to split or at least offer to pay your share. but if someone specifically invited you out as their treat, then graciously accepting is fine. the key thing is just to offer to pay or split without making it awkward - most people appreciate the gesture even if they decline.
I'd say it really does depend on the dynamic. If someone suggests a restaurant and you both just decide to grab lunch together, offering to split is the move - that's pretty much the baseline for most casual hangouts. But if someone invited you specifically as their treat, that's different. You can usually tell the difference by how they phrase it. "Hey, I know this great place, want to check it out?" is different from "Let me take you out to dinner at this new spot I've been wanting to try."
The way I see it, if you're genuinely unsure, just offer to pay your own portion when the check comes. Most people appreciate that gesture even if they decline. I've found that offering upfront is way less awkward than hoping they'll cover it or waiting to see what happens. If you're the one being taken out, a simple "thanks for suggesting and treating!" goes a long way and shows you're not just taking it for granted.
Context matters too - like if someone's celebrating something or specifically asked you out as a friend date, they might genuinely want to treat. But in most everyday situations with friends or colleagues, splitting or at least offering your share is just being considerate. Nobody likes feeling like they're subsidizing someone else's meal, and most people respect when you step up.
Don't assume whoever suggested it is automatically treating - that's awkward for everyone. I went to brunch last month because a coworker mentioned this place she loved, and we both just naturally split the check without it being weird, but if someone actually extends an invitation ("let me take you there"), that's different than just a recommendation.
