How much sensitive stuff are you accessing on those public networks? Yeah, a free VPN is better than nothing, but it's not the perfect solution - those free ones often sell your data or are super slow, and anyway they won't protect you from sketchy sites or malware! If you're accessing important accounts (email, banking, work stuff), I'd say it's worth investing in a decent paid VPN, maybe don't spend a fortune but at least something solid that won't slow down your MacBook. Alternatively, use your phone's hotspot when you can - it's safer than some random public network!

francesca.bianchi asker I log into work email, cloud documents and a few personal accounts. I'll get a paid VPN, thanks for the advice on quality.
