Small hatchback or compact sedan for first car?

I've owned both over the years, and the hatchback wins for a first car - you get better visibility, easier parking in tight spots, and way more practical cargo space when you actually need to haul stuff. Sedans look sleeker and feel a bit more "grown up," but they're honestly overkill for a beginner and eat up trunk space that you'll miss fast. The hatchback's higher driving position also makes you feel less nervous in traffic, which matters when you're still building confidence on the road.

The choice really depends more on your budget and where you'll drive than which body type is "better" for a first car. Hatchbacks tend to be cheaper upfront and easier to park in tight spots, while sedans feel a bit more stable on highways and hold their resale value better in most markets. If you're mainly doing city driving, go hatch; if you're commuting longer distances, sedan makes more sense. Either way, focus on finding something reliable with good maintenance records rather than getting hung up on the body style.
