I've had a black plastic 200-liter barrel sitting out at my dacha for about fifteen years now. The water heats up in it, and I use a watering can to water the vegetables and flowers. My neighbors say it's outdated already, that I need something more modern. But maybe it's still doing the job fine?
If your barrel isn't leaking and the water heats up properly in it, there's no need to replace it at all. Modern irrigation systems look nicer and are more convenient, sure, but an old-fashioned container with a watering can works just as well - it just takes more manual labor. I'd only recommend replacing it if it starts to rust, cracks, or if water pools unevenly in it. As long as you don't have those problems, there's no point in spending extra money.
