USB outlet stops working after a few months - normal wear or defect?

I installed a couple of those combo outlets with built-in USB ports in my kitchen and bedroom about 8 months ago. The one in the kitchen still works fine, but the bedroom one just stopped charging my phone last week even though the regular outlet part still works. Should I just replace it or is there something else going on?

This is pretty typical wear on built-in USB outlets - they tend to fail faster than regular outlets because the USB ports deal with constant plugging/unplugging and the internal circuitry can degrade. Since the regular outlet part still works, it's almost certainly just the USB charging circuit that burned out, which means the unit itself is defective rather than a sign something's wrong with your wiring. You've got a few options: grab a replacement combo outlet (they're cheap), swap just the USB ports if they're replaceable on that model, or go with a separate USB charger block instead if you want to avoid this happening again. What type of charger were you using - was it always the same phone cable or did you plug different devices in there?

The bedroom one might just need a replacement - those combo outlets do wear out faster than standard ones since the USB circuitry takes a beating from repeated charging cycles. Before you swap it though, try unplugging everything for a minute and plugging back in; sometimes a reset helps, but honestly if that doesn't work you're probably looking at grabbing a new one 😅
