Utility bills for an empty apartment - do I have to pay after I've moved out?

I moved out of my apartment in Munich at the end of August and handed the keys over to my landlord. Now he's sent me the utilities bill for September, even though the apartment was vacant. Do I have to pay for a month of heating, water, and garbage if I wasn't living there anymore?

Basically, you only have to pay the utilities for the time you actually used the apartment - so until the end of August, not for September. Your landlord can't just bill you for the vacant apartment. The important thing now is that you clarify this in writing and refer to your move-out date; if you can't reach an agreement, you could contact tenant protection associations in Munich free of charge - they can give you concrete help 🏠 Best thing is to quickly check whether your lease has anything special in it, but normally it should be clear-cut.
