I had the same problem at mine and honestly it's not just mold - often it's also detergent buildup that accumulates in the corners, or dirt that gets stuck after each wash. What I do now is leave the door open between cycles, like basically all the time, and once a month I run an empty cycle with white vinegar or baking soda. It really makes a difference, no more smell. So yeah you gotta clean it, but it's not that hard to prevent if you air out your machine properly.
Don't put it off! A smell in the machine is usually caused by mold building up in the drum or the seal, especially if you leave standing water after washes. Run an empty cycle with white vinegar or baking soda, and leave the door open between uses so it dries properly. It should go away quickly and it's really not complicated to maintain regularly!
For me it was really the humidity that was the problem - I started leaving the door open between washes and that made a pretty big difference. What others say about mold is true, but airing out the machine after each load is honestly just as effective as a full cleaning.
