My friends are suggesting I create a gift registry on one of those services so guests know what to get us. But I'm not sure - won't it look awkward or too mercenary? And which platform would be best for it?
A gift registry is honestly just a normal practice that saves guests time and keeps you from ending up with a bunch of stuff you don't need. There's nothing mercenary about it: people want to give you something anyway, and without a registry they tend to buy pretty much the same things for everyone. In practice people use Yandex.Market (it's convenient for collecting items from different stores), Wildberries, or just a shared Google Doc with links - the main thing is to specify a price range so nobody feels awkward.
