What does it mean when you dream about someone right before they contact you?

This has happened to me multiple times now - I'll have a vivid dream about an old friend or relative, and then within a day or two they'll reach out or I'll run into them. It feels too coincidental to ignore. Is there something to this, or am I just noticing patterns because I want to believe in something meaningful?

You're most likely noticing a pattern that was already there but invisible to you until it mattered. Our brains are pattern-recognition machines, and we naturally remember the hits (dream about someone, they contact you) while forgetting the dozens of dreams that go nowhere. It's the same reason you suddenly see a car model everywhere after you buy one - it was always there, you just weren't tracking it. That said, there's nothing wrong with finding meaning in coincidences if it makes you feel more connected to people; just don't let it convince you there's actual telepathy happening.

The tricky part is that you're probably remembering the dreams that "hit" way more vividly than the hundreds you forgot, while forgetting all the times you dreamed about someone and never heard from them. Your brain's doing what it's built to do - find the pattern that feels meaningful.

Here's something practical though: start keeping a dream journal with dates, and also log when people actually contact you without a dream preceding it. After a month or two of real data, you'll see if there's actually a pattern or if it's just confirmation bias playing tricks. Most people who do this end up realizing the dreams and contacts are way more random than they felt in the moment.
