Why do I keep dreaming about my old job even though I left it 2 years ago?

I quit my marketing job in 2024 and now work in a completely different field. But several times a week I still have dreams that I need to go to work or that I've forgotten something. The dreams feel super stressful, even though I don't actually miss the job. Could this just be because my subconscious hasn't processed it?

The important thing is that you shouldn't read too much into these dreams - your brain is simply processing old routines and stress patterns that got ingrained over the years. That's completely normal and doesn't necessarily mean you're not processing things properly. Our brain stores these recurring situations like a default program, and especially when the job was stressful, these dreams can be stubborn and stick around even when you've emotionally moved on from that job.

The reason is that your subconscious is still pulling up these stress experiences to kind of prepare you for similar situations in the future. That's evolutionarily based - your body learned that this job meant stress, and it's reminding you of that. The fact that you don't miss the job doesn't change that. Over time these dreams should decrease, but two years is actually not that long for such deep programming. It's also possible that you currently have new stressors in your new job that trigger similar patterns - sometimes your brain mixes old and new anxiety dreams together.

What I'd recommend: try to make your new job as different as possible. Different routines, different break habits, maybe even work in a different space - that helps your brain understand that something different is normal now. And if the dreams are really getting to you, it can help not to take them so seriously and just move on. Most people report that this sorts itself out after a while if you don't put too much energy into it.

If the dreams are really waking you up multiple times a week with actual stress, that can be a sign that you're unconsciously still carrying an emotional burden from back then - not necessarily because you miss the job, but because the way it ended or how things went there wasn't properly closed off. What most people overlook: it's not just "your brain cleaning house," it can also mean that maybe you never really got closure on it or there's still unprocessed guilt lying around (I noticed that myself when I switched IT scenes). Try it out and see if it helps if you consciously close that chapter during the day - write down what stressed you out back then, or talk to someone about it. For me, after a real conversation with my former boss, the whole thing was done.
