I had canvas for a messenger bag that I carried on my bike, and it held up great! For summer bags I'd recommend dense linen or cotton - they breathe, don't stick to your body, and hold their shape well. You can go with blended fabrics that have synthetics so the bag wrinkles less and is easier to wash. The main thing is to make sure the fabric is dense enough, otherwise the bottom will start to sag under the weight of your stuff!
