Hey, I just got my hunting license and I'd like to start hunting when the season opens. I'm a bit lost with all the stuff I need to buy - rifle, clothes, accessories... What would you guys recommend for a first setup without spending too much?
Start with a used rifle in good condition rather than a new one - it's honestly way cheaper and you can always upgrade later if you really get into it! For clothes, the main thing is camo suited to the season and especially plenty of blaze orange for safety - sporting goods stores sell decent hunting outfits without breaking the bank. As for accessories like ammo belts, skinning knives, and binoculars, you can pick those up gradually depending on what you'll actually use in the field!
What you really shouldn't skip are the clothes and safety gear when you're starting out, because you can find a used rifle, but a good waterproof jacket and reliable ammunition are non-negotiable. I agree on going used for the rifle, but before you buy just any model, ask around or hit up a local hunting club to see if you can try out a few different guns - not all rifles handle the same way and you need to feel comfortable with it. For clothes, don't forget decent hiking boots on top of the camo, your back and your feet will thank you after spending hours in the field. And set aside some cash for ammo and a trip to a gunsmith to have your rifle cleaned and serviced once you find one - it's not super expensive but it matters.
