Don't just slap spackle over a crack and call it done - it'll crack right back open. For small cracks, use joint compound and a putty knife, feathering the edges so it blends in, then sand it smooth once it dries. Bigger cracks need mesh tape first to give the compound something to grip, and you might need two or three thin coats instead of one thick one. If a crack keeps coming back in the same spot, something's moving in the wall itself, so you'll want to figure out what's causing that before patching.
