What should I do if the sink trap smells rotten?

MI miguel_sol ES 🔍 Enthusiast 👁 85 ⚑ Report Plumbing

I've been noticing a horrible smell coming from the bathroom sink drain for a couple of weeks now. I've tried pouring bleach and hot water down it but the smell is still there. Is this something serious or can I fix it myself without calling a plumber?

Have you already unscrewed the trap to clean inside it? Usually the smell comes from hair, soap, and accumulated organic matter that bleach doesn't completely dissolve - you just remove the trap from the siphon (it's easy, turn it counterclockwise), scrub it well with a brush and hot water, and you're done; if it still smells after that, then there might be a deeper problem in the pipes and you should call a plumber.

miguel_sol asker No, I haven't taken it apart yet. I'll try cleaning the trap directly like you said.
