Meh, I still send postcards when I travel, and I always have good luck at little local shops in the places I visit. I'm not talking about your standard tourist chains, but those small shops that sell stuff made by local creatives - the postcards there are genuinely beautiful and have character. Once on a road trip to Tuscany I stopped in a tiny village and found a woman who hand-drew postcards, and hers were incredible. Train stations often have decent selections too if you're in a hurry, but it's basically a gamble on quality.
If you don't want to leave it to chance, the real trick is looking in places where people who love vintage or handmade stuff hang out: flea markets, antique shops, independent bookstores. Online helps if you know exactly what you're looking for, but missing out on the thrill of finding something unexpected while wandering around a new city would be a shame. Personally, I get friends who travel more than I do to send me postcards - it costs almost nothing to ship and it always comes with stories behind it.
